Calibration Engineer

Basic Purpose
Under limited supervision, ensures all calibrations and algorithms developed for production meet all applicable regulatory, quality, and performance requirements, in accordance with the company goals and sound engineering principles, methodologies, and standards.

Minimum Position Specifications
Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, plus a minimum of 10 years’ experience in powertrain engineering. At least 5 of those years should be in a lead calibration role. A thorough understanding of spark-ignited engine physics, control systems, and engine certification requirements is mandatory. A working knowledge of model-based control systems and control system algorithm development is highly beneficial. A sound, working knowledge of MS Office software tools is required. A secure, working knowledge of INCA or similar OEM calibration tools is required. Superior problem solving skills, project management skills, and independent resourcefulness is required.

Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to work with hand tools, obtain a commercial driver’s license, operate heavy trucks up to 33,000 lb GVWR, and drive vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.

Primary Responsibilities
• Perform all aspects of engine calibration on dyno and in-vehicle for spark-ignited engine configurations.
• Calibrate on-board diagnostic (OBD) parameters for all engine system monitors, exhaust and aftertreatment system monitors, and fuel system monitors.
• Assist product and validation engineers with control system hardware selection and validation requirements.
• Provide technical expertise and support in control system design reviews, DFMEA activities, specification research, acceptance criteria determinations, and problem resolution processes.
• Develop and document design and performance specifications for third party software and calibration support.
• Perform subjective analyses of powertrain systems and vehicle performance.
• Troubleshoot engine and vehicle performance issues through calibration changes, as required.
• Analyze, interpret, and present testing results to internal and external customers.
• Generate reports and other documentation for feasibility, development, and validation activities, as appropriate.
• Provide technical assistance to other individuals and departments, as needed.
• Follow Safety and Housekeeping Procedures and Instructions while performing duties.
• Support the company’s operational systems for environmental and quality controls.

Secondary Responsibilities
• Simple algorithm development with MATLAB and Simulink, a model-based control system design tool.
• Analyze software algorithms developed by third parties for accuracy, effectiveness, robustness, and adherence to design requirements.
• Generate work orders for technical personnel to build and prepare engines, powertrains, and vehicles for calibration support.
• Troubleshoot control system functionality in dyno and on vehicles.
• Assist with instrumentation, inspections, and calibration activities in a hands-on manner, as needed.
• Conduct failure analyses on components and powertrain systems.

Organizational Relationships
This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager relative to engineering activities. This position interacts with all departments within the company as well as numerous customer and supplier contacts.
